Apply Noise Reduction Filters to Your Audio Recordings on the iPad

What's the most important part of any video project? The audio. Most audiences will tolerate poor video quality, but poor audio will lose your audience, quick. That's why today's post is about processing your audio recordings to reduce background noise. Recording a certain amount of ambient noise from wind, air conditioning, traffic, the whole world around us is unavoidable even with the most expensive equipment. The key is to make sure it doesn't distract the audience, so a old trick was to add a bit of background music to mask out the noise but not overwhelm any vocals. Computer processing and software have advanced so that now you can apply noise reduction filters to your recordings. Audacity, an open source (free) audio processor available on most desktop computers, is the first program that actually effective at doing this. So we need Audacity on the iPad... or Audacity's noise reduction functions. NCH Software's Pocket WavePad HD is the first iPad app to do this (hopefully, others will too). Read on to see how to remove background noise from your voice recordings on the iPad.

Casio electronic piano connected to a iPad

Believe me I'm not a musician and I don't play one on TV. In fact if you heard me play you would definitely know I have no musical talent at all. I do however have an old electronic piano that my sisters (who both can play) once used. With a new USB Midi adapter this article will show you how to connect the iPad to the keyboard music instrument. By mating these two devices the iPad will be able to play music available from the internet on the instrument. Music played on the electronic piano can be recorded on the iPad. And finally you will be able to use the electronic keyboard to input music into apps like Garageband to compose your own music.

Record Analog Audio via 3.5mm Line-out or Microphone Jack into the iPad

Updated on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 7:11PM by Registered CommenterJames Chi

Before Bit Torrent, Napster, heck the Internet people shared audio by plugging in the headphone jack of one Walkman into the microphone jack of another. It's the very first analog hole! For myself I'm interested in recording the audio from some of the instrument apps available on the App Store and use it in the iPad version of GarageBand. I could hook up the iPad to some external speakers and record it with a microphone, but let's try the old headphone trick to see if we can get a better recording. That leaves us with needing a 3.5mm or 1/8" audio line-in or microphone jack on the iPad. The main difference between the two being the line-out audio being much (~10db) stronger. There are three main solutions to this which we will explore.

Audio pasted into a Garageband track in the demo song "Curtain Call."

This month Apple released its first update for Garageband for the iPad. The update adds the ability to import uncompressed CAF, AIFF, WAV, and Apple Loops. It also allows audio to be pasted in from supported apps on the iPad. Since importing in audio files relies on getting them from your computer using iTunes File Sharing, and we want to try to use the iPad as much as possible; pasting in audio from the clipboard sound goods (pun intended). What apps support this and why would we want to?
